Kolkata, Aug 9 (NationPress) The mother of the R.G. Kar victim was hospitalized on Saturday after experiencing health issues during the 'Nabanna Avijan' (March to Secretariat). Initially, her companions attempted to provide relief by splashing cold water on her face. However, as her condition worsened, she was transported to a private facility.
Witnesses among the protesters reported that she was feeling lightheaded and had trouble breathing. One protester stated, "She collapsed after being assaulted by police officers. She has been moved to a private hospital for care."
The victim's mother claimed that she was struck by police after attempting to march towards Nabanna (the state secretariat) alongside her husband and other demonstrators.
The Nabanna Avijan on the anniversary of the R.G. Kar incident escalated into chaos as police employed a significant baton charge to disperse the crowd and reportedly assaulted the victim's parents.
The opposition leader in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who also claimed to have been assaulted by authorities, hurried to the private hospital to check on the victim’s mother’s condition.
The mother and BJP leaders asserted that during the police intervention, the sacred shell bangle she wore, a traditional symbol of married Hindu women, was shattered.
The victim's mother reiterated that she had been attacked by police, saying, "We were unarmed. Why are they afraid of us? The police assaulted me and broke my Sankha-Pola. They threw me onto the road and kicked me."
Joined by BJP legislators including Adhikari, the victim's parents initiated a march from Dorina Crossing towards Nabanna, demanding justice for their daughter.
However, a large police presence halted their progress at the Park Street - Jawaharlal Nehru Road crossing. As BJP supporters attempted to breach the barricades, a confrontation erupted between the protesters and police, leading to a baton charge.
Tensions flared in areas near Park Street as BJP legislators and the victim's parents commenced a sit-in protest in response to the police aggression.
The victim's father voiced their grievances, questioning, “What is our crime? We will reach Nabanna. They cannot stop us.”
On this anniversary, the victim's parents had called for a Nabanna Avijan, which received support from various organizations.
All BJP legislators, including Subhendu Adhikari, actively participated in today’s protest march.
As the procession advanced towards Nabanna through the Park Street area, police intervened to halt Adhikari and other BJP MLAs.
