Richa Ghosh's Name Listed as 'Under Ad-Judication' in West Bengal Electoral Rolls
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 1 (NationPress) The name of Richa Ghosh, a member of the victorious Indian women's cricket team at the World Cup, has been marked as 'under ad-judication' in West Bengal's final electoral rolls. This development emerged after the publication of the state's final voters' list, which followed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
On Saturday, the Election Commission of India categorized voters into three groups: those excluded have been termed as 'deleted', eligible voters are labeled as 'approved', and a total of 60,06,675 individuals, whose documents remain unverified, are listed as 'under ad-judication'.
Richa resides in ward number 19 of the Siliguri Municipality in north Bengal. The state government has honored her with the 'Banga Bhushan' award, and she has also been appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the state police. Despite these accolades, her name still falls under the 'under adjudication' category.
Her father, Manabendra Ghosh, stated, "Richa spends most of the year outside the state or even abroad due to her commitments in Indian cricket. A notice was sent in her name during the SIR process."
He added that after receiving the SIR notice, all necessary documents were submitted online. "Yet, a resolution remains elusive," Manabendra said.
Richa is not the only one in this situation; her sister, Somashree Ghosh, is also categorized similarly.
Moushumi Hazra, the councilor for Siliguri Municipality's ward 19 and a leader of the Left Front, visited Richa's home upon learning of this issue. Hazra remarked, "It’s disgraceful. Richa, who has brought pride to all of India, is facing this treatment. Imagine how the average citizen must feel."
The Mayor of Siliguri and senior leader of the Trinamool Congress, Goutam Deb, expressed his frustration towards the Election Commission regarding this matter, stating, "Richa is not just the pride of Siliguri, but of the entire nation. This is an arbitrary action by the Election Commission, and I condemn their behavior."
Additionally, a political controversy has arisen concerning state minister and Harishchandrapur MLA Tajmul Hossain, who is also listed as 'under ad-judication'. Hossain claimed he received the SIR notice from the Election Commission on January 18 and was surprised that his name still remained in that category despite submitting all documents.
In another instance, a Trinamool panchayat member’s name was removed from the final voter's list. Jharna Mandal Barman, a member of the Baroghariya Gram Panchayat in Jalpaiguri district, faced accusations from the BJP early in the SIR phase, claiming she was a resident of Bangladesh.
Her husband, Ratan Barman, confirmed that she registered to vote in India in 2011 after marrying here. After initially contesting as a BJP candidate in 2013, she later joined the Trinamool, leading to her nomination and election in 2023. However, upon the publication of the voters' list, Jharna Mandal Barman's name was found to be deleted.
