During the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Nagaland Secretariat Plaza, the Chief Minister emphasized his government's dedication to realizing the democratic aspirations of the populace, following the principles laid out in the Constitution.
Reaffirming that resolving the long-standing Naga Political issue remains a top priority for his administration, Rio expressed that the ongoing peace process symbolizes hope for a permanent resolution that guarantees justice and dignity for all.
“The state government continues to serve as an active facilitator in the Naga political discussions,” stated the Chief Minister.
Addressing the worries of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) regarding their demand for a Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT), he expressed optimism that the government would tackle ENPO's concerns “in a spirit of brotherhood.”
Rio voiced his apprehension over the Centre's decision to reduce the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the India-Myanmar border from 16 km to 10 km and limit crossings to nine points, urging the Union government to reconsider this sensitive matter.
To curb illegal immigration and safeguard indigenous populations, the issuance of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) for outsiders has been digitized, resulting in over 26,500 ILPs being issued online in the first half of this year.
New categories for ILPs have been introduced for agricultural workers, transporters, domestic helpers, and others, with rigorous verification at Nagaland's entry points, he noted.
Rio highlighted Nagaland's advancements in agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, livestock, and organic farming, announcing the state's recognition as the leading coffee producer in the Northeast region.
He mentioned that over Rs 686 crore has been allocated under PM-KISAN to more than 2.3 lakh farmers, with plans underway to expand oil palm cultivation, attain organic certification under 'Naga Organic', and award recognitions for contributions to the organic sector.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister pointed to infrastructure developments, including national and state highways, housing, and renewable energy projects.
Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, 94% of rural households have already been covered, with solar and hydro projects, along with smart prepaid electric metering, extending energy access to the residents.
Rio noted that the annual 10-day Hornbill Festival has significantly boosted tourism, reporting a 33% increase in tourist arrivals in 2024 compared to the previous year, generating nearly Rs 190 crore for the local economy.
Discussing the law and order situation, the Chief Minister asserted that overall stability remains intact due to effective collaboration among the civil administration, police, and various security forces.
Highlighting the state's War against Drugs initiative, Rio stated that anti-drug operations have been intensified, with various forces, including the Nagaland police, seizing drugs worth over Rs 81 crore in recent months.
The 79th Independence Day was celebrated across Mizoram through various functions and events.
