New Delhi, March 10 (NationPress) The central government has designated Rs 227.42 crore until February 24 for the year 2025-26 aimed at enhancing the modernisation of police forces across States and Union Territories, as revealed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Nityanand Rai, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, disclosed in a written response that since 2021-22, significant upgrades to infrastructure and technology have been either proposed or completed under the “Assistance to States & UTs for Modernisation of Police (ASUMP)” initiative.
In the fiscal year 2024-25, a total of Rs 117.15 crore was either released or utilized; in 2023-24, it reached Rs 52.30 crore; Rs 36.69 crore was allocated in 2022-23; and Rs 158.57 crore was spent in 2021-22.
Projects under the ASUMP include advancements in the communication infrastructure through satellite-linked communication terminals (POLNET Fly Away Terminal), enhancement of response times via the Integrated Command and Control Centre featuring state-of-the-art equipment, acquisition of sophisticated weaponry, and an upgrade of forensic capabilities, including the purchase of digital forensic kits and advanced cyber forensic tools.
The Minister highlighted that 'police' and 'public order' are designated as State subjects in the seventh Schedule of the Constitution, making it the duty of individual state governments to evaluate policing effectiveness and crime detection within their jurisdictions.
