Chandigarh, Dec 6 (NationPress) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) announced on Saturday that the nominations for its candidates in the Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections faced widespread rejection throughout Punjab. The party is urging an extension of the nomination deadline due to numerous allegations of highhandedness and discrimination, which they claim undermine the integrity of the electoral process.

Akali leader Daljit Singh Cheema has called for the appointment of independent observers to oversee the elections and is demanding accountability measures against police and civil officials who, according to him, have created a hostile election environment by acting as stooges for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. “We will present the names of Returning Officers who have exhibited bias by rejecting opposition nominations en masse, and we will request that they be disqualified from serving in the upcoming general elections in 2027,” he stated.

Cheema voiced strong criticism against the State Election Commission, stating it is unacceptable that while democracy is under threat in the state, the commission appears to remain passive.

“This raises serious concerns regarding the State Election Commission's integrity as it has failed to ensure fair and impartial elections and has not taken action against police officials, including Patiala SSP Varun Sharma, who has allegedly instructed police to obstruct opposition candidates from accessing Returning Officers via illegal means,” Cheema added.

Furthermore, Cheema urged the State Election Commission to mandate all Returning Officers to accept self-declarations regarding dues and cautioned against rejecting forms based on trivial reasons. He emphasized that the commission should instruct Block Development Officers to refrain from victimizing candidates through the rejection of nominations under the guise of no-due certificates, advocating for a transparent process to obtain such certificates.

Point of View

The situation unfolding in Punjab regarding the rejection of nominations for Zila Parishad elections raises vital questions about electoral integrity and the role of governance in ensuring a fair democratic process. The Shiromani Akali Dal's concerns reflect a broader issue of political accountability and the importance of transparent electoral practices.
