Chandigarh, July 2 (NationPress) The AAP government in Punjab, guided by Bhagwant Mann, is preparing for a Cabinet expansion, marking the seventh such event in three years, scheduled for Thursday with the anticipated inclusion of newly elected legislator Sanjeev Arora.
In addition to Arora's entry, who stepped down from his Rajya Sabha seat after winning the Ludhiana (West) Assembly bypoll, there is a possibility of inducting Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan into the 16-member Cabinet.
Currently, there are two vacant positions in the Cabinet, which has a capacity for 18 ministers, including the Chief Minister.
There are widespread speculations that some current ministers might face replacements, and a reshuffling of portfolios could occur.
On June 24, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that the Cabinet expansion would take place in the coming days, with Sanjeev Arora assured a ministerial position, in line with a commitment made during the by-election campaign.
“We will expand the Cabinet within the next two to three days to include Sanjeev Arora as a minister. This is a promise we made, and we intend to keep it,” Mann told the media after a meeting with Governor Gulab Chand Kataria.
However, the expansion has been delayed due to the Governor's unavailability, as he was in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
Even AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal announced during the Ludhiana (West) campaign that if elected, Arora would be included in the Cabinet.
Arora resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership on Tuesday after winning the Assembly bypoll. He submitted his resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who has accepted it.
Having served in the Rajya Sabha for nearly three years, Arora expressed his gratitude to the people of Punjab, fellow MPs, and the Rajya Sabha Chairman for their support throughout his tenure.
Arora won the bypoll by a margin of 10,637 votes, defeating Congress's two-time legislator Bharat Bhushan Ashu.
