BJP's Diplu Ranjan Sarma Claims Congress Presence in Assam is Dwindling
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 21 (NationPress) Diplu Ranjan Sarma, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the New Guwahati Assembly constituency, launched a fierce critique of the Congress party on Saturday, asserting that its organizational presence in Assam has drastically diminished and is now limited to a few specific areas.
During a press conference as part of his election campaign, Sarma stated, "Aside from a few regions, the Congress lacks any substantial presence throughout the remainder of the state."
He emphasized that the Congress has continuously lost the confidence of the public due to its failure to offer a convincing governance model.
Sarma remarked that voters are increasingly prioritizing performance and outcomes over mere political rhetoric.
"Citizens will cast their votes based on principles and governance capabilities. They will evaluate whether a political party can produce tangible results or not," he expressed, conveying his faith in the BJP's developmental approach.
Addressing the criticisms regarding his candidacy, Sarma refuted claims labeling him as an "outsider."
He pointed out that he has been a resident of Guwahati for over 25 years and challenged the arguments put forth by the Opposition.
"How can I be classified as an outsider after living here for such an extended period?" he questioned.
In comparing his situation to that of Congress leaders, Sarma noted, "Rahul Gandhi ran from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, and the late former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi contested from the Margherita Assembly seat. Were they also deemed outsiders?"
Reiterating his commitment to development, Sarma pointed out that Guwahati necessitates planned urban growth, enhanced infrastructure, and efficient solutions to persistent challenges like traffic jams and flooding.
He asserted that the BJP-led state government has proven its ability to address these issues effectively.
Sarma also highlighted that job creation, improved healthcare, and enhanced educational facilities would be top priorities if he is elected.
The BJP leader, Diplu Ranjan Sarma, believes that the people of Guwahati are seeking stability and progress, which the BJP is dedicated to delivering.
He previously demonstrated his electoral strength by winning the Samaguri Assembly by-election in 2024, marking a significant milestone in his political journey within Assam.
Historically a Congress stronghold, the Samaguri constituency was represented for a long time by the Opposition's Rakibul Husain before he transitioned to the Lok Sabha as Dhubri MP in the 2024 general elections, defeating AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal.
In the bypoll, Congress nominated Rakibul Hussain's son, Tanjil Hussain, in Samaguri; however, he faced defeat against BJP's Diplu Ranjan Sarma.
Sarma's victory in Samaguri was perceived as a result of strong grassroots engagement and effective campaign outreach, as he successfully garnered support from various voter demographics, including significant minority populations.
