New Delhi, Jan 31 (NationPress) The Supreme Court on Friday consented to review a petition submitted by Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA Abbas Ansari requesting bail regarding a criminal case filed against him by the Uttar Pradesh Police under the strict Gangsters Act.

While issuing a notice, a panel of Justices Surya Kant and N.K. Singh called for a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on this issue.

Additional Solicitor General K.M. Natraj, representing the UP government, requested a two-week period to present the counter affidavit.

Previously, the Justice Surya Kant-led Bench had dismissed Ansari's writ petition challenging the application of the case under the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, instructing Ansari, the son of the late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, to approach the Allahabad High Court for bail first.

The apex court had urged the Allahabad HC to prioritize the bail application and resolve it within four weeks, considering that Abbas Ansari had been detained for a significant duration in other cases.

The Registry of the High Court was instructed to present this directive to the Hon’ble Chief Justice, ensuring that the bail application could be scheduled before the appropriate Bench within the specified timeline.

Following the dismissal of his bail plea by the Allahabad High Court on December 18, 2024, Ansari approached the apex court. In October of the previous year, he had obtained bail from the Supreme Court concerning the unlawful jail visit case and the money laundering case initiated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Nevertheless, Abbas Ansari remained incarcerated due to the pending plea against the Gangster Act.
