New Delhi, March 7 (NationPress) The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to Abbas Ansari, a legislator from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), in an extortion case filed under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters Act last year.

The apex court has prohibited the son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari from leaving the state without obtaining permission from the trial court.

Setting the next hearing for six weeks later, the apex court instructed the Uttar Pradesh Police to monitor the legislator's activities and submit a status report regarding his behavior during the bail period.

In addition to close surveillance of Abbas Ansari, the court has restricted him from making public statements regarding the cases against him.

He is required to remain at his official residence in Lucknow throughout the bail period and must seek approval from both the trial court and district administration before visiting his constituency, Mau Sadar.

The MLA was implicated in an FIR filed on August 31, 2024, at the Kotwali Karvi Police Station in Chitrakoot district under Sections 2 and 3 of the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986.

Other individuals named in the FIR include Faraz Khan, Niyaz Ansari, Navneet Sachan, and Shahbaz Alam Khan, who have been accused of extortion and assault.

On January 31, a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh Police regarding the legislator’s bail request.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Ansari, previously challenged the validity of the FIR, asserting it was founded on unsubstantiated allegations.

His father, the former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Mukhtar Ansari, passed away on March 28, 2024, at the Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, due to a cardiac arrest.

Last month, the apex court instructed the Uttar Pradesh authorities to provide medical and judicial inquiry reports concerning the death of the jailed gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari on March 28, 2024.

A bench that included Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S.V.N. Bhatti acknowledged the arguments presented by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Mukhtar’s other son, Umar Ansari.

Umar Ansari asserted that the state government had not provided the medical and judicial inquiry reports related to his father's death.
