Enhanced Security Forces in Murshidabad Ahead of Bengal Elections on April 23
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 15 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has recognized the minority-majority district of Murshidabad as the most sensitive area in West Bengal for the upcoming Assembly elections on April 23. As a result, they plan to deploy an extensive number of security forces in this region.
Sources from the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office indicate that out of a total of 2,407 companies of security personnel designated for the initial phase of polling, a significant 316 companies (representing 13 percent) will specifically be assigned to Murshidabad.
Geographically, Murshidabad is divided into two police districts: Murshidabad Police District and Jangipur Police District. Of the 316 companies allocated for Murshidabad, 240 companies will serve the Murshidabad Police District, while the remaining 76 companies will support the Jangipur Police.
According to the insider, the area under the Murshidabad Police District is considerably larger than that of Jangipur, with a higher number of sensitive zones. Therefore, a greater concentration of forces is necessary in this district.
Additionally, East Midnapore, home district of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, will see the second-largest force deployment at 273 companies (11.34 percent). Following closely, West Midnapore will have 271 companies (11.25 percent).
The lowest deployment of Central forces will occur in the hilly district of Kalimpong, with only 21 companies assigned.
The districts participating in the first phase also feature two Police Commissariats, including the Siliguri Metropolitan Police in Darjeeling and the Asansol - Durgapur Police Commissariat in West Burdwan. For Siliguri, 44 companies will be deployed, while 125 companies are set for Asansol-Durgapur.
This time, the ECI has opted for a comprehensive security strategy, deploying not just the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) but also personnel from the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) and armed police units from other states, alongside the West Bengal Police.
