Chennai, Jan 18 (NationPress) The President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), K. Selvaperunthagai, has officially invited Tamil film icon turned politician Vijay to become a part of the INDIA Bloc.
Addressing journalists on Saturday, the Congress leader asserted that if Vijay is genuinely dedicated to combating communalism, he should consider joining the INDIA Bloc.
At the inaugural conference of his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay publicly identified the DMK as his political opponent and the BJP as his ideological foe.
Selvaperunthagai's invitation arrives merely two weeks prior to the Erode East bypoll, and a year before the significant Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, where shifts in political alliances are anticipated, especially among opposition groups.
The TNCC president remarked: “If Vijay is serious about promoting secular values, countering Hindutva ideologies, and eradicating communalism, he must join the INDIA Bloc. This would resonate with the ideals he has expressed. As a pragmatic Indian citizen, I believe this is the appropriate course of action for him.” However, Selvaperunthagai specified that neither the TNCC nor the AICC leadership has reached any formal conclusions regarding Vijay’s inclusion. He mentioned that the final decision regarding any political progress will be made by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and INDIA Bloc leader M.K. Stalin.
While the Congress leader’s invitation hints at a potential partnership, Vijay has persistently criticized the DMK government led by Stalin. This strong opposition raises doubts about the viability of such a collaboration. Selvaperunthagai’s proposal seems to counter rumors about a possible electoral understanding between TVK and the AIADMK, which have been intensified by the AIADMK’s main opposition faction.
When queried about Vijay’s impending visit to Ekanapuram village, where residents are protesting against the proposed Parandur greenfield airport, Selvaperunthagai stated: “The police have granted him permission, so he will proceed. The Congress party maintains that the local populace should not suffer any adverse effects.”
Vijay declared the establishment of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in February 2024, mentioning that his party will not participate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Instead, TVK intends to engage in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Vijay clarified that his fan club, All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (AITVMI), has been actively engaged in social welfare; achieving comprehensive social, economic, and political reforms necessitates political power.
The invitation extended to Vijay by the TNCC signifies an endeavor to draw influential political figures into the INDIA Bloc. Nevertheless, Vijay’s strong criticisms of the DMK and his independent political ambitions complicate the potential for such a partnership.
