Mumbai, Jan 20 (NationPress) The Mumbai Police have discovered 19 fingerprints belonging to Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, the suspect in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing incident, at the crime scene and the 12-storey building known as Satguru Sharan, according to sources.
As reported by police sources, the fingerprints were located in multiple areas including stairs, windows, and apartments, which will provide compelling evidence against the accused.
The police are actively gathering crucial evidence from the crime scene with the assistance of fingerprints and forensic specialists.
Previously, sources disclosed that the 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, arrested for attacking actor Saif Ali Khan during a botched robbery, was a wrestler in Bangladesh prior to his arrival in India.
During questioning, Shehzad mentioned that he had competed in the lower weight category at both district and national-level wrestling tournaments in Bangladesh.
His wrestling expertise, as he stated, allowed him to assault Saif Ali Khan without incurring any injuries himself, police sources indicated.
After the crime, Shehzad reportedly changed his clothes three to four times in an effort to avoid detection. He traversed several locations, moving from Bandra to Dadar, Worli, Andheri, and ultimately to Thane.
The day following the incident, he returned to Dadar, continuously wandering around, making it challenging for police to locate him.
Shehzad had come to Mumbai in September and began working at a hotel through a housekeeping agency. The agency's contract was also subjected to a raid during the investigation.
Currently, police have relocated Shehzad from Santacruz Police Station to Bandra Police Station for further interrogation and investigation. They disclosed that Shehzad had scouted several Bollywood celebrities' residences before choosing to target Saif Ali Khan's home.
He admitted to surveying Saif Ali Khan's residence as well as Shah Rukh Khan's Mannat, among other prominent homes.
Using a ladder to examine entry points, Shehzad abandoned plans to target Mannat due to its stringent security measures and high walls.
On January 15, Shehzad conducted a thorough reconnaissance of Saif Ali Khan's residence and pinpointed an accessible entry point. He returned later that night, entering the building at 1:37 a.m. on January 16.
However, his robbery attempt was unsuccessful, and in a fit of panic, he assaulted Saif Ali Khan before fleeing without stealing anything.
In his desperation to return to Bangladesh after being unemployed for a month, Shehzad sought financial assistance but was unsuccessful in securing funds. Motivated by an auto driver's comments about celebrity homes in Bandra, he resolved to rob a high-profile residence to fund his return.
Despite having a clear opportunity to steal cash and jewelry, Shehzad fled in fear of getting caught. He then monitored the investigation closely through news channels, saving screenshots of suspects displayed by the media, which were later retrieved from his mobile device.
Mumbai Police initially detained two suspects who resembled Shehzad but continued their search. He was finally apprehended on Sunday morning near Hiranandani Estate in Kasarvadavali, Thane, approximately 35 kilometers from Saif Ali Khan's residence.
He had been hiding in a labor camp within a forested area and attempted to avoid arrest by concealing himself in bushes but was captured following a seven-hour search operation.
According to DCP Dixit Gedam, Shehzad did not possess any Indian identification documents, and evidence confirmed his Bangladeshi nationality. Investigators also discovered that he had resided in Mumbai for four months under the alias Bijoy Das.
Upon his capture, Shehzad confessed to the crime, stating, "Haan, maine hi kiya hai" (Yes, I did it). He has been placed in police custody for five days, during which investigators plan to reconstruct the crime scene at Saif Ali Khan's residence.
The incident has sparked concerns regarding the security of high-profile residences in Mumbai. Police continue their investigation to reveal additional details regarding Shehzad's activities and background.
