Jaipur, Sep 16 (NationPress) Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched a strong critique of the Opposition regarding GST reforms on Tuesday, stating, “Those who once referred to GST as the ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ and pledged to eliminate it are now vying for recognition for the reforms.”
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing relief to the average citizen, noting that both essential and commonly used items will become more affordable.
During his address at the Circuit House in Jodhpur, Shekhawat pointed out that monthly GST collections, which hovered around ₹60,000–₹70,000 crore in its initial months back in 2017, have now surged past ₹2 lakh crore.
Addressing concerns about state revenues, he reassured that the Centre is dedicated to compensating states for any deficits.
Furthermore, he indicated a readiness to incorporate petroleum products into the GST framework “if all states concur,” while praising Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for extending additional subsidies on Ujjwala gas cylinders in Rajasthan.
Referring to PM Modi’s speech on Independence Day, Shekhawat humorously remarked, “The Prime Minister mentioned that the nation will have two Diwalis this year, but I believe we are actually celebrating three — one already visible outside car showrooms, the second during Navratri shopping, and the third during Diwali itself.”
Regarding the political turmoil in Rajasthan in 2020, Shekhawat stated that the court’s acceptance of the ACB and CBI closure report validates that the Congress misused institutions for political vendetta. “The truth may be disturbed but cannot be suppressed. Congress filed false cases due to internal rivalries. The public has rendered its verdict,” he asserted.
On the Supreme Court’s attention to the pollution in the Jojri River, Shekhawat accused former CM Ashok Gehlot of halting the project “to seek revenge for his son’s defeat.”
He stated that while the Centre cannot directly intervene, the current Bhajan Lal Sharma administration has rejuvenated the project with funds aimed at cleaning the river and rehabilitating slum areas.
Announcing a 'Seva Pakhwada' from PM Modi’s birthday on September 17 until October 2, Shekhawat mentioned that the Ministry of Culture will organize painting and drawing competitions as well as blood donation camps across the nation, including in Jodhpur.
