Why Did Karnataka Deputy CM Call the National Herald Notice Shocking?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Dec 6 (NationPress) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has labeled the notice he received regarding the National Herald case as shocking.
While addressing the media at his residence in Bengaluru, Shivakumar remarked, "This is truly shocking for me. I have submitted all necessary information to the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Both my brother and I were summoned by the ED and we complied fully. There is nothing amiss with our institution; as members of Congress, we have always supported it."
He continued, "Moreover, there is nothing to conceal. Everything is documented. I fail to comprehend why, even after the ED has issued a chargesheet, the police felt it necessary to initiate a case. We will confront this and contest it in court," he stated.
Shivakumar further stated, "This is merely an act of harassment. There is no wrongdoing on our part. The funds we manage are ours to allocate as we see fit. We fulfill our tax obligations, and there is nothing illicit involved. The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case is outdated, and a chargesheet has already been submitted. What further investigation is warranted?"
He accused the authorities of attempting to confuse the public, saying, "This is aimed at harassing Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and their supporters. I received the notice yesterday (Friday), and I find it quite surprising. I am currently reviewing it, and once I grasp its contents, I will respond accordingly. My brother D. K. Suresh (Congress MP) has also received a notice due to his donations," he elaborated.
Describing the action as unacceptable, he stated, "National Herald and Young Indian are integral to our party. We, as Congress leaders, supported them through our trusts during their financial hardships. Many leaders, including myself, have contributed to their welfare. I will analyze the notice legally. This harassment is unjust, and I denounce it."
The Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police issued a notice to Shivakumar on Friday concerning the National Herald case.
The police believe that Shivakumar possesses crucial information pertinent to the case, hence the issuance of the notice.
The Economic Offences Wing is currently investigating the National Herald case and has requested Shivakumar to provide detailed financial and transaction-related information.
The notice instructs him to submit particulars regarding the amounts donated to Young Indian (YI) by Shivakumar, his associates, and related companies.
Additionally, the police have raised inquiries regarding the intent behind the bank transfers to Young Indian, along with requests for documented communications—both electronic and written—between him and Young Indian or any related stakeholders.
Further questions include who prompted Shivakumar and his associated entities to make payments labeled as donations.
The notice also seeks clarification on the source of the funds.
Shivakumar is understood to have significant information linked to the FIR lodged on October 3 against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Shivakumar and his brother D. K. Suresh have reportedly donated Rs 2.5 crore to Young India.
Moreover, an additional Rs 2.5 crore from Shivakumar's trusts was contributed to the organization, according to sources.
Previously, the ED had interrogated the Shivakumar brothers regarding these allegations. Now, the Delhi Police have issued a notice to Shivakumar, demanding details of financial transactions and requiring him to appear for inquiry by December 19.
