J&K Lok Bhavan in Srinagar on Saturday, 16 May marked Sikkim Statehood Day with a gathering that brought together students, security personnel, and members of the Sikkimese community residing in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. The event underscored the cultural and constitutional bonds linking India's states and UTs under the 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' framework.

What the Lieutenant Governor Said

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha addressed the gathering and extended his greetings to the people of Sikkim on the occasion. He described Sikkim as 'the sacred land of Guru Padmasambhava' and praised the Himalayan state as 'a radiant star among Himalayan states and UTs,' recognised globally for organic farming, peace, and spirituality.

Sinha highlighted Sikkim's 'incredible linguistic diversity and rich cultural heritage' as qualities that distinguish it on the world stage. He added that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sikkim is 'scaling new heights of development and stands at the forefront of the nation's vision.'

The J&K–Sikkim Horticulture Agreement

A key highlight of the address was the July 2022 J&K–Sikkim horticulture agreement, which Sinha said has 'yielded groundbreaking results' in fostering interaction among youth, farmers, and researchers from both regions. He called it 'a prime example of the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat spirit,' arguing that such cross-regional collaboration will be instrumental in realising the collective goal of a 'Viksit Bharat.'

Sikkim: A Snapshot

Situated in the Eastern Himalaya, Sikkim shares borders with Bhutan to the east, Tibet to the north and northeast, Nepal's Koshi Province to the west, and West Bengal to the south. It is also in proximity to the strategically significant Siliguri Corridor, which borders Bangladesh.

Sikkim is the least populous and second-smallest state in India. It is celebrated for its biodiversity, alpine and subtropical climates, and is home to Kangchenjunga — the highest peak in India and the third-highest mountain on Earth.

Significance of the Celebration

The event reflects a broader effort by J&K's administration to foster inter-regional solidarity across India's diverse states and territories. Notably, such observances of other states' statehood days within J&K Lok Bhavan have become a recurring gesture of national unity since the UT's reorganisation in 2019. The gathering's inclusive composition — students, security personnel, and the Sikkimese diaspora — points to the administration's intent to build community ties beyond administrative formality.
