How is the ‘Smart Khakis’ scheme reshaping drug and liquor enforcement in Coimbatore rural district?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Coimbatore, Jan 5 (NationPress) In a significant breakthrough, the police in Coimbatore rural district made substantial strides in combating drug trafficking and the illegal liquor industry in 2025. This progress is largely credited to the introduction of the ‘Smart Khakis’ scheme, which facilitated continuous patrolling and enhanced visible policing throughout the rural regions.
Data gathered by the Coimbatore rural police indicated that 670 kg of narcotics were confiscated across 464 drug trafficking cases, culminating in the detention of 556 individuals.
Law enforcement officials hailed these statistics as a remarkable victory and one of the most thorough anti-drug initiatives executed in recent years within the district.
District Superintendent of Police, K Karthikeyan, noted that numerous preventive and enforcement strategies were rolled out in 2025 to bolster law and order.
“The previous year marked the initiation of the ‘Smart Khakis’ scheme, wherein police officers were assigned on a shift basis to patrol the entire Coimbatore rural district continuously,” he remarked.
As part of this initiative, patrol teams were specifically mandated to visit remote villages, vulnerable areas, and crime-prone hotspots. This tactical approach, as noted by the SP, was pivotal in deterring crimes and facilitating quicker responses.
“The constant presence of police officers served as a deterrent. Their routine visits to sensitive areas enabled us to detect suspicious behaviors early and avert offenses,” he elaborated.
Highlighting a 52% increase in drug seizures in 2025, Karthikeyan stated that these outcomes were achieved through rigorous enforcement, intelligence-driven operations, and targeted initiatives by the rural district police.
He stressed that this rise indicated enhanced detection and policing capabilities rather than a surge in drug-related activities.
Additionally, the Coimbatore rural police intensified efforts against the illegal sale and production of alcohol throughout the year. In this campaign, authorities executed 12,940 raids and registered 3,921 cases. The confiscated items included 4,484 litres of illicit liquor, 8,987 litres of toddy, 5,145 litres of rectified spirit, and 150 litres of fermented wash.
Moreover, ₹83,882 in cash and 10 vehicles utilized in the illegal trade were seized from the suspects.
Police officials asserted that the success of these operations underscored the significance of persistent patrolling, visible law enforcement, and targeted measures in preserving law and order across Coimbatore’s rural landscapes.
