Will Srinagar Experience Its First Snowfall This Season?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Jan 22 (NationPress) A persistent cloud cover throughout the night has intensified the chill sweeping through the Valley's plains, as the Meteorological (MeT) Department has predicted extensive rain and snow for Jammu and Kashmir starting Thursday evening.
According to MeT officials, two significant Western Disturbances have approached J&K and are expected to remain active from January 22 to January 24, with peak conditions anticipated on January 23.
“Under the impact of these two influential Western Disturbances, widespread moderate to heavy rain and snow are expected, with the plains—including Srinagar city—possibly witnessing the season’s inaugural snowfall.
“An additional weather event is anticipated around January 28 due to a weaker Western Disturbance in comparison to the current one,” the MeT officials remarked.
A Western Disturbance is an extratropical storm originating in the Mediterranean that brings rain and snow to India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. The success of the Rabi crop in these regions heavily relies on the activities of the Western Disturbance.
Traditionally recognized as the 40-day period of severe winter cold, which brings heavy snowfall to higher altitudes, the ‘Chillai Kalan’ has this year disappointed residents of Kashmir due to an extended spell of dry cold with minimal precipitation.
The Chillai Kalan will conclude in just eight days. This year’s period has seen a rise in respiratory ailments attributed to the dry, cold air, as noted by medical professionals.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam noted minus 4.4 degrees and Gulmarg minus 4 degrees Celsius.
In Jammu, the temperature was recorded at 7.2 degrees Celsius, Katra at 6.6, Batote at 3.1, Banihal at minus 2.2, and Bhaderwah at minus 1.5 degrees Celsius as the lowest overnight temperatures.
The MeT Department has advised tourists and transporters to adjust their travel plans in light of the adverse weather warnings. Farmers are urged to halt farming activities during the inclement weather expected to commence this evening.
