Will Srinagar Experience the Season's First Snowfall?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Jan 22 (NationPress) A layer of clouds settled over the Valley, intensifying the chill that has swept through its plains on Thursday. The Meteorological (MeT) Department has predicted widespread rain and snow across Jammu and Kashmir starting Thursday evening.
Officials from the MeT Department reported that two significant Western Disturbances have arrived in J&K and will remain active from January 22 to January 24, with the highest impact anticipated on January 23.
“Due to these two powerful disturbances, a broad area of moderate to heavy rain/snow is expected, and the plains, including Srinagar city, may witness this season’s inaugural snowfall,” they stated.
“Another weather event is anticipated around January 28 due to a weaker Western Disturbance,” added the MeT officials.
A Western Disturbance refers to an extratropical storm originating in the Mediterranean that brings rain and snow to India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. The occurrence of a strong Western Disturbance is crucial for the prospects of a healthy Rabi crop in these regions.
Typically recognized as the 40-day period of severe winter cold that results in heavy snowfall in the higher altitudes, Chillai Kalan this year has left many in Kashmir disappointed due to an extended spell of dry cold with minimal precipitation.
The Chillai Kalan period concludes in just eight days. This year’s Chillai Kalan has also seen a rise in lung-related health issues, attributed by doctors to the dry, cold air.
The minimum temperatures recorded included minus 3.4 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, minus 4.4 in Pahalgam, and minus 4 in Gulmarg. Jammu city recorded 7.2 degrees Celsius, with Katra at 6.6, Batote at 3.1, Banihal at minus 2.2, and Bhaderwah at minus 1.5.
The MeT Department has advised tourists and transporters to plan their travels considering the adverse weather warnings issued. Farmers have also been urged to suspend their farming activities during the impending inclement weather that begins this evening.
