New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) The Ayushman Bharat (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) is making a significant impact on countless low-income families across India by providing free medical treatment for severe health issues and alleviating financial stress. In Nala Sopara West, Sopara Hospital, operated by the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, stands out as a leading institution, delivering entirely free and high-quality healthcare services to those holding Ayushman cards.
In a conversation with IANS, Jaleel Sheikh, whose father has been battling lung ailments, expressed gratitude for the support received. "My father had extreme breathing difficulties. I brought him to this hospital in Sopara West, and thanks to the Ayushman card, we're receiving free treatment here," he noted, showcasing the scheme's accessibility for critical health conditions.
Iqbal Sheikh’s wife also shared her story, stating that her husband had been hospitalized for 18 days and was receiving complimentary medical care.
“He was experiencing breathing issues. After 18 days of treatment here, he is now doing well,” she recounted to IANS, emphasizing the favorable effects on both patient health and family finances.
The Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) is recognized as the largest government-funded health insurance program globally, offering an annual health coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family for secondary and tertiary healthcare.
As of March 2026, over 43.52 crore Ayushman cards have been issued, including 1.14 crore 'Vay Vandana' cards for senior citizens. The initiative encompasses more than 1,900 medical procedures across 27 specialties, allowing beneficiaries to receive cashless and paperless treatment at any of the 36,229 empanelled public and private hospitals throughout the country.
There are no limitations on family size, age, or gender, and pre-existing conditions are covered from the outset.
The program's coverage extends to diagnostics, medications, surgeries, ICU expenses, and doctor fees, along with support for up to three days before hospitalization and 15 days post-hospitalization.
Recent developments between 2025 and 2026 have further expanded access. Citizens aged 70 and older now receive Rs 5 lakh in annual coverage, regardless of their economic status, while seniors within already-covered families receive an additional Rs 5 lakh top-up.
Approximately 37 lakh families of frontline workers, including ASHAs, Anganwadi workers, and helpers, are now part of the program. As of April 2025, Delhi became the 35th state/UT to implement the scheme, and a special initiative from January 15 to April 15, 2026, is assisting remaining eligible beneficiaries and seniors in obtaining their cards.
With facilities like Sopara Hospital leading the charge, the Ayushman Bharat initiative continues to guarantee that quality healthcare is available, affordable, and free for millions of families across India.
