Samajwadi Party (SP) national vice-president Kiranmoy Nanda on Monday, 15 June launched a pointed attack on All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata, triggering fresh speculation about a widening rift between SP president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Banerjee within the opposition Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc.

What Nanda Said

Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Nanda was unsparing in his criticism of Banerjee's refusal to accept the outcome of the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections. 'However, she might be in denial mode; the fact is that the people of West Bengal rejected her party. The people did not want her party to be in power. Mamata Banerjee herself got defeated. Previously, too, she was personally defeated. Even then, she refused to accept her personal defeat graciously. She is doing the same thing this time as well. The fact is that the majority of voters in Bhabanipur Assembly constituency rejected her this time,' Nanda said.

Akhilesh's Kolkata Visit Explained

Nanda's remarks carry added weight given that Akhilesh Yadav had personally travelled to Kolkata after the West Bengal election results were declared on 4 May, visiting Banerjee's residence and publicly expressing solidarity with her claims that Trinamool had been 'forcefully and unconstitutionally' defeated due to an alleged conspiracy involving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Nanda, however, offered a candid explanation for that gesture. According to him, Yadav's show of solidarity was driven purely by 'political compulsions' arising from the INDIA bloc alliance — not genuine agreement with Banerjee's position. 'The reality is that the people of West Bengal have thoroughly rejected the Trinamool Congress this time,' Nanda said, effectively contradicting his own party chief's public stance.

Who Is Kiranmoy Nanda

Nanda is a seasoned political figure with deep roots in West Bengal. He previously served as the state's Fisheries Minister during the Left Front government, when SP was a constituent of the West Bengal Left Front. After the Left Front's 34-year rule was ended by Banerjee's Trinamool in 2011, Nanda relocated to Lucknow and subsequently became an SP member of the Rajya Sabha. His familiarity with Bengal politics lends his remarks a credibility that goes beyond routine inter-party friction.
