Chennai, Oct 2 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed strong disapproval on Thursday regarding the Central government’s decision to issue a special postage stamp and a commemorative Rs 100 coin to celebrate the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He argued that such actions undermine India’s secular principles and disrespect the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
While paying floral tributes to Gandhi on his birth anniversary, Stalin voiced serious concerns about India honoring an organization that influenced the mindset of a communal figure responsible for the assassination of the Father of the Nation.
His remarks followed the previous day's unveiling of the stamp and coin by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commemorate 100 years of the RSS.
In a post on the social media platform X, Stalin reaffirmed that India is a secular republic grounded in the moral and political philosophy of the Mahatma.
"He is the strength that will continuously empower us to combat the seeds of hatred among people and divisive forces whenever they arise," he stated, urging citizens to recommit to the Mahatma's values.
Stalin's sharpest criticism targeted the Modi government’s choice to officially honor the RSS.
"India must be rescued from the unfortunate reality where the country’s leadership releases special postage stamps and a commemorative coin on the centenary of the RSS movement, which was shaped by the dreams of the communal leader who assassinated our Father of the Nation," he remarked, calling for a collective pledge among citizens to uphold the principles of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Rs 100 commemorative coin introduced by the Prime Minister prominently displays an image of Bharata Mata, accompanied by a lion in the Varada mudra gesture of blessing, as RSS members are depicted paying homage on the obverse side.
The reverse showcases the national emblem.
Stalin’s declaration, labeling the decision a "distortion of India’s soul," is one of the most vehement political responses from the opposition against the Centre’s actions, particularly as criticisms mount that the government is attempting to normalize the RSS — historically seen as the ideological foundation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party — while marginalizing the Mahatma's inclusive and secular vision.
