New Delhi, Dec 29 (NationPress) A three-judge panel of the Supreme Court is set to review the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) appeal against the Delhi High Court's ruling that granted bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, an expelled member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, while suspending his life sentence in the 2017 Unnao rape case.

According to the published causelist on the Supreme Court's website, a vacation bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih, will convene to discuss the case on Monday.

The CBI has approached the apex court in response to the December 23 ruling from the Delhi High Court, which permitted Sengar’s request for a suspension of sentence while his appeal is under consideration.

It has been reported that both the CBI and the victim’s family have expressed their desire to contest the Delhi High Court’s verdict in the Supreme Court.

Family members of the victim, together with activists advocating for women's rights, have voiced their opposition to Sengar’s bail, arguing that it undermines public trust and conveys a detrimental message regarding crimes against women.

In the proceedings at the Delhi High Court, the CBI firmly opposed Sengar’s request, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime and the potential risks associated.

A division bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar ultimately decided to suspend Sengar’s sentence and granted him conditional bail while his appeal is pending, under stringent conditions.

The Unnao rape case sparked widespread outrage across the nation. In December 2019, a trial court found Sengar guilty of kidnapping and raping a minor girl, sentencing him to life imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs 25 lakh.

Previously, the Supreme Court had ordered that all cases related to this incident be moved from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi and mandated that the trial proceed on a day-to-day basis.
