Chennai, Feb 17 (NationPress) The Opposition Leader and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami sharply criticized the Tamil Nadu government’s Interim Budget for 2026–27 on Tuesday, calling it a “fig tree” that may look impressive on the outside but is hollow at its core.

In response to the Interim Budget unveiled by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu in the Assembly earlier that day, Palaniswami addressed the media and accused the ruling DMK government of not fulfilling numerous commitments made to various community segments, including state employees.

He asserted that the State’s tax revenue had plummeted by Rs 26,000 crore and questioned the government's ability to manage finances effectively.

“Despite creating an expert committee to propose strategies for enhancing the State's financial health, the government has continued to ramp up borrowing. If the fiscal deficit continues to swell, the public will face the consequences through higher taxes,” Palaniswami warned.

The AIADMK leader also disparaged the Agriculture Budget presented by Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam, claiming it provided minimal support to farmers. “Farmers are being misled in the name of an Agriculture Budget. There is nothing new or substantial in the financial outline to genuinely assist the agricultural community,” he stated.

Utilizing a metaphor to emphasize his critique, Palaniswami likened the Interim Budget to a fig tree. “It appears beautiful and bountiful from the outside. However, a closer inspection reveals it to be hollow and unproductive,” he remarked, indicating that the government prioritized aesthetics over genuine policy initiatives.

On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu government presented both the Interim Budget for 2026–27 and the Agriculture Budget in the Assembly, with Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu detailing the State’s financial projections and Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam explaining specific allocations for the sector.

With Assembly elections looming, the Interim Budget has sparked strong reactions from the Opposition, setting the stage for intense discussions in the Assembly regarding the State’s fiscal status, debt levels, and welfare promises.

Point of View
