TDP-led NDA wins 85% ZPTCs, 75% MPTCs in Andhra Pradesh civic polls
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Andhra Pradesh has delivered a commanding sweep in the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) and Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) elections, winning 499 out of 582 ZPTC seats and 5,861 out of 7,768 MPTC seats, according to final results released by the State Election Commission (SEC) on Sunday night, 7 November 2026. The result marks the second consecutive local body rout for the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in as many weeks.
Party-wise Breakdown
Within the ruling alliance, the TDP emerged as the dominant force, bagging 406 ZPTCs and 4,806 MPTCs on its own. Alliance partner Jana Sena Party (JSP), led by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, won 73 ZPTCs and 938 MPTCs, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contributed 20 ZPTCs and 117 MPTCs to the coalition tally.
The YSRCP finished a distant second with 76 ZPTCs and 1,711 MPTCs. The Indian National Congress drew a complete blank, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) managed one ZPTC and 15 MPTCs. Six Independents were elected in ZPTC polls and 162 Independents in MPTC contests.
District-level Highlights
Polling had been conducted across 28 districts on 5 November 2026 for the contested seats, following the uncontested declaration of 77 ZPTCs and 2,051 MPTCs. The NDA coalition swept the majority of districts. In SPSR Nellore district, the TDP won 26 out of 30 ZPTC seats, while YSRCP managed just two. In Tirupati district, TDP bagged 21 of 31 seats against YSRCP's six.
Notably, the results from YSR Kadapa — the home district of YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy — proved particularly damaging for the opposition. His party won only two out of 16 ZPTC seats there, with TDP claiming 12 and JSP the remaining two. This comes after the YSRCP's poor showing in the urban local body elections the previous week, underscoring a consistent pattern of declining support for the party.
YSRCP Alleges Irregularities
YSRCP leaders alleged that the vote-counting process was marred by irregularities and claimed the SEC failed to act on their complaints. Former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that officials were pressured to manipulate results across several districts, mirroring complaints his party raised during the earlier municipal election count.
'Democracy is being undermined at every turn. Chandrababu Naidu may have won the election, but he has suffered a moral defeat. We may have lost the election, but we have won the hearts of the people,' Jagan Mohan Reddy said. He added: 'Power may help someone win an election, but it cannot earn the people's trust. Democracy may be suppressed, but the people's aspirations cannot be silenced.'
The ruling alliance and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's office had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
What This Result Signals
The twin victories in urban and rural local body elections consolidate the TDP-led coalition's hold on grassroots governance in Andhra Pradesh, less than two years after wresting power from the YSRCP in the assembly elections. Critics argue these results will also strengthen the NDA's administrative machinery ahead of future state polls. Whether the YSRCP can mount an organisational rebuild from this point will be closely watched in the months ahead.
