Telangana CM Critiques Population-Based Lok Sabha Delimitation for Southern States
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, April 13 (NationPress) Telangana's Chief Minister, A. Revanth Reddy, expressed on Monday that the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies based on population is inherently unfair to southern and smaller states across the nation. He cautioned that such a decision could ultimately undermine the nation's strength over time.
In a recent social media message directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister emphasized that national interests should always take precedence over any party's agenda.
“It is evident to every citizen that while there is widespread support for women's reservation, the delimitation of Lok Sabha seats has raised numerous concerns. For instance, if the women’s quota were to be implemented immediately for state-specific Assembly seats, it would be embraced nationwide,” the Congress leader stated.
“Utilizing women’s reservation as a distraction, the push for a population-based national delimitation could benefit the BJP in the short term, but if it is unjust to southern and smaller states, it will weaken our nation in the long haul. National interests must transcend any party's interests,” he remarked.
Revanth Reddy suggested that alternative models, rather than a straightforward pro-rata approach for Lok Sabha delimitation, be considered for a broader and sustainable perspective. “Here, I present one such potential model for your review. It is crucial that we foster a national consensus, beginning with an inclusive discussion among all parties, rather than imposing this critical policy in a biased manner,” he noted.
The Chief Minister shared a report from a Telugu newspaper regarding a proposal for delimitation based on Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).
According to this proposal, states demonstrating strong economic growth would experience a significant increase in their Lok Sabha representation. States such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala stand to gain if the GSDP-linked delimitation model is implemented.
Under this framework, the number of Lok Sabha seats for Telangana could rise from 17 to 30. Both Block A (south+west) and Block B (remaining states) would each receive an additional 136 seats.
