Hyderabad, Feb 17 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Telangana, A. Revanth Reddy, on Monday instructed officials to promptly set up processes for the issuance of new ration cards to all families that meet eligibility criteria throughout the state.

He urged officials to swiftly finish verifying the applications for new ration cards that were submitted during the Gram Sabhas, during the Caste Survey, and at Mee Seva centers.

The Chief Minister’s Office reported that he queried officials regarding the overwhelming turnout for ration cards at Mee Seva centers, despite the government having received a large number of applications.

Officials informed him that some families were repeatedly submitting applications, which might explain the significant crowd at the centers.

The Chief Minister remarked that if the cards had been issued without delay, this situation could have been avoided, and he directed officials to take urgent actions to distribute ration cards.

He requested that families who have already submitted applications refrain from visiting the centers again.

Due to the model code of conduct being enforced in numerous districts for the MLC elections, the Chief Minister ordered that ration card issuance begin in the districts where the code is not applicable. New ration cards will be distributed in all districts once the election code is lifted.

The Chief Minister reviewed various designs for the new ration cards created by the Civil Supplies Department.

The government began accepting applications for new ration cards on January 26, fulfilling a commitment made by the Congress party during the 2023 Assembly elections.

The Congress party has been criticizing the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for failing to issue new ration cards during its decade-long governance.

Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy disclosed in the Legislative Council in December 2024 that approximately 18 lakh ration card applications were pending.

He mentioned that prior to the reorganization of Andhra Pradesh, there were 91.68 lakh ration cardholders in Telangana.

Following the return of people from Andhra Pradesh after the formation of Telangana, 2.46 lakh cards were canceled.

The minister noted that there are currently 89.95 lakh ration cardholders in the state, benefiting a total of 2.81 crore individuals.
