Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 26 (NationPress) The leader of the Indian Union Muslim League, Pankkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, publicly expressed his support for Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday, labeling him a ‘crowd puller’ during a time of political controversy following Tharoor's remarks praising PM Modi’s U.S. visit and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a prominent English daily.

“Tharoor is indeed a crowd puller and remains a committed member of the Congress party. He has consistently campaigned effectively for the Congress-led UDF,” Thangal stated to the press.

When questioned whether the upcoming UDF meeting would address this situation, he replied, “With elections on the horizon, it is crucial for the UDF to conduct a vigorous campaign. Every ally within the UDF has a duty to bolster its strength,” Thangal emphasized.

Despite several prominent Congress leaders expressing dissatisfaction with Tharoor's comments, he was called for a private discussion with Rahul Gandhi.

Thangal, who leads the IUML, serves as the second largest ally in the Congress-led UDF and maintains close ties with the Congress high command.

The IUML demonstrates strong support for Shashi Tharoor. He was the only non-IUML leader present when Thangal was appointed as the successor to Syed Hyder Ali Shihab Thangal.

Tharoor also played a significant role at the IUML’s pro-Palestine rally in Malappuram in October 2023, where he urged Israel to cease air strikes in Gaza and highlighted India's longstanding commitment to peace, a principle rooted in the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.

His speech and attendance substantially energized the IUML rally.
