Malappuram, March 29 (NationPress) Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress General Secretary and MP for Wayanad, concluded her three-day visit to her constituency with a splendid Iftar at the home of Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, the leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), on Saturday.
The IUML is the second-largest ally of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and played a crucial role in the substantial four lakh vote margin that Priyanka Gandhi achieved during last year's by-election for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.
Throughout her visit, Priyanka Gandhi participated in numerous events, including both party-related and official meetings, while overseeing various initiatives from both the Central and state governments.
One significant event she attended was the District Development Co-ordination and Monitoring Committee, where the district collector and local legislators from the Wayanad Collectorate were also in attendance.
She also participated in the distribution of keys for 29 houses to underprivileged families in the Wandoor Assembly constituency, a part of the Wayanad Lok Sabha region.
This initiative is a continuation of a program initiated by her brother during his tenure representing Wayanad from 2019 to 2024, where he pledged to construct homes for the needy.
Prior to her departure for Delhi, Priyanka Gandhi attended a lavish Iftar at Thangal's residence, which was also graced by Thangal's close family members, as well as several legislators from IUML and a few from Congress.
The meeting between Priyanka Gandhi and Thangal was anticipated, especially given the IUML's discontent regarding the internal conflicts within Congress.
This encounter is particularly significant as Kerala prepares for local body elections later this year, along with Assembly elections in 2026.
Sources indicate that Congress's high command is considering appointing Priyanka Gandhi to oversee relations with the state Congress leadership in preparation for the forthcoming elections.
Previously, Priyanka Gandhi expressed her intention to persist in raising issues pertinent to Wayanad and Kerala in Parliament.
She emphasized that discussions are increasingly being disrupted by the treasury benches in the Lok Sabha, hindering her ability to allocate sufficient time to address her constituency's concerns.
