TMC councillor Biswajit Mondal arrested in Kolkata sexual assault case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata Police on Thursday, 4 June, arrested Biswajit Mondal, a three-time Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor from Ward No. 114 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), in connection with a sexual assault and harassment complaint filed by a woman. The arrest, executed by the Regent Park Police Station, takes the count of TMC councillors taken into custody in the past three days to four.
Key allegations against the councillor
According to city police sources, the complainant accused Mondal of molesting and sexually harassing her on two separate occasions — first in March 2024 and again on 9 May this year. She also alleged that the councillor used obscene language and issued threats against her.
The woman has claimed that she approached the police after the first incident in 2024, but reportedly no action was initiated at the time, which she attributed to Mondal's links with the ruling party in West Bengal.
How the case was registered
After the alleged second incident in May, the complainant returned to the Regent Park Police Station. This time, an FIR was registered, an investigation was launched, and Mondal was arrested on Thursday morning.
Fourth TMC councillor held in three days
The arrest is part of a wider sweep involving KMC councillors. On 2 June, TMC councillors Sachin Singh (Ward 36) and Arjit Das (Ward 106) were arrested on charges of corruption and extortion. On the night of 3 June, Mahesh Kumar Sharma, councillor of Ward 42, was arrested on similar charges.
Mayor's resignation adds to turmoil
In a parallel development, former Minister Firhad Hakim resigned as Mayor of the KMC on Wednesday. According to TMC sources, Hakim, who is the Kolkata Port MLA, stepped down after consulting party supremo and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
His resignation came the same day several Trinamool MLAs attended an administrative meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna, called by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Hakim quit the mayoral post after returning from that meeting.
What happens next
Police are expected to produce Mondal before a city court, with further investigation underway into the sequence of complaints filed by the woman. The cascading arrests and the mayoral exit signal an unusually turbulent week for the TMC's hold over civic administration in Kolkata.
