Chennai, Jan 16 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu CPI-M state secretary P. Shanmugam has called for a CB-CID investigation into the mysterious death of Prithidevi, a third-year BSc Agriculture student at Sethu Bhaskara Agricultural College in Sivaganga.

On January 7, Prithidevi reportedly fell from the terrace of the college hostel and succumbed to her injuries the next day while receiving medical treatment.

Shanmugam pointed out numerous inconsistencies surrounding the incident and criticized the college administration for its poor response to the situation.

Instead of immediately notifying the police, the college merely informed the student’s parents that she had fallen and was unconscious, effectively shifting the responsibility of initiating an investigation onto the grieving family.

Initially, Prithidevi was admitted to Global Hospital in Karaikudi and was later transferred to Madurai Meenakshi Mission Hospital, where she passed away on January 8.

“Her father, Selvakumar, a resident of Veeramanikapuram in Tirunelveli district, was compelled to file a police complaint at their instruction, rather than the college taking action,” Shanmugam stated.

The Left leader mentioned several unresolved questions posed by Prithidevi’s family and villagers.

“Why did the college administration neglect to file a report about her death? How was Prithidevi able to access the locked terrace door? Why were there no CCTV cameras installed in the hostel? Why did no college representative visit Madurai Meenakshi Mission Hospital to assist the grieving family?” he queried.

He emphasized that given these circumstances, there are ample reasons to classify Prithidevi’s death as suspicious.

The CPI-M leader further remarked that the local police's behavior seems biased.

“We urge the state government to transfer the case to the CB-CID for a comprehensive investigation and provide necessary support to the student’s family,” Shanmugam remarked.

The Kallal police station in Sivaganga has initiated a case under Section 194 of the Indian Penal Code, based on the complaint lodged by Prithidevi’s father, and an investigation is currently underway.
