Kottayam, July 4 (NationPress) The Congress party in Kerala has called for a judicial investigation into the recent collapse of the Kottayam Medical College building.
The structure at the government medical college gave way on Thursday morning, resulting in the tragic death of a woman and injuries to two others.
State Congress president Sunny Joseph and several party leaders visited the hospital complex to assess the situation firsthand.
"We insist on a judicial inquiry into the entire incident. The District Collector is conducting an investigation, but this is unacceptable as he has indirect ties to the matter, making his findings insufficient," stated Joseph.
"Furthermore, we call for appropriate compensation to be awarded to the family of 56-year-old Bindhu, who lost her life in this incident. Bindhu's daughter is pursuing a nursing degree, and the state government should facilitate her tuition and ensure she receives a government job. Bindhu was at the hospital for her daughter’s surgery, and the government should cover her medical expenses," he continued.
Joseph expressed strong disapproval of the police for filing charges against party legislator Chandy Oommen, who was present during the incident and advocating for immediate rescue efforts.
Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan criticized the state Health Department, led by Minister Veena George, stating it is in dire straits.
"The best solution for George is to step down, as no improvements have been made in the health sector under her leadership," remarked Satheesan.
In the meantime, at the nearly finished home of Bindhu, her son was heartbroken, having just received his first paycheck, which he wished to present to his mother.
"I am unwell and unable to work, while Bindhu was the one earning Rs 300 a day to support our family. Our son received his first salary on Thursday, waiting to bring it to Bindhu. She was with me until 10 a.m. This tragedy should not happen to anyone," lamented Bindhu's husband.
On Friday, the Kottayam District Collector visited Bindhu's home and promised governmental assistance.
In light of the backlash against her, the security for Health Minister George was increased on Friday morning.
The majority of the public outcry is directed at her and State Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan, who arrived at the scene after the collapse and mistakenly reported that only two individuals had minor injuries.
"The ministers claimed the building was not in use. It was Oommen who was there, raised the alarm, and initiated the rescue operations," said the Congress party in Kerala.
With the Vijayan government facing scrutiny, the media has been restricted from accessing the collapsed site.
The Congress party plans to initiate a protest starting July 8, condemning the government's failure to resolve various issues within the health sector.
State BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar declared this a preventable tragedy.
"This incident represents what we view as an honor killing, as two state ministers were present yet failed to take action, leading to Bindhu’s demise. The state should file charges against these ministers, and we are launching a protest to ensure this occurs," asserted Chandrasekhar.
