Synopsis

The RMC has announced an expected rise in temperatures for various districts in Tamil Nadu, influenced by moderate easterly winds. Dry weather will prevail, especially in coastal regions, leading to slight temperature increases and mist in the mornings. The state has also observed above-average rainfall, resulting in full reservoirs.

Key Takeaways

  • RMC predicts temperature rise in Tamil Nadu.
  • Maximum temperatures may increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius.
  • Dry conditions expected for the next five days.
  • Mist and haze likely in coastal districts.
  • Reservoirs nearing full capacity after excess rainfall.

Chennai, Feb 19 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast a rise in temperatures across numerous districts in Tamil Nadu for the upcoming days.

Due to the influence of moderate easterlies and north-easterlies, dry weather is anticipated over isolated areas of Tamil Nadu in the coming days, with maximum temperatures expected to increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal.

Additionally, the northeasterly winds may lead to mist and haze, particularly in the coastal districts such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram during the early morning.

Consequently, both maximum and minimum temperatures may see a slight dip in the morning, averaging around 33 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The RMC reported that on Tuesday, Erode and Karur districts experienced maximum temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius.

Dry weather conditions are expected to persist across the state in the forthcoming days.

In the last 24 hours, certain regions in northern Tamil Nadu and hilly areas have recorded temperature increases of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above the normal range.

Interior plains have seen maximum temperatures fluctuating between 33 and 36.5 degrees Celsius, while coastal areas reported temperatures ranging from 29 to 35 degrees Celsius.

With light to moderate easterly and northeasterly winds prevailing at lower tropospheric levels, dry weather is anticipated to continue in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu for the next five days.

The RMC indicated that maximum temperatures are likely to remain 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal until Thursday.

Extended-range predictions based on dynamical models suggest that temperatures will remain near normal to slightly above normal, ranging from 30 to 34 degrees Celsius in most plains of the state.

Tamil Nadu experienced a 14 percent excess rainfall during the recent northeast monsoon season, accumulating 447 mm of rain against an average of 393 mm.

Chennai saw 845 mm of rainfall, which is 16 percent above the average, while Coimbatore reported a rise in precipitation by 47 percent.

The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (WRD) disclosed that most reservoirs in the state are nearing full capacity, with 12 reservoirs (three in Coimbatore, seven in Madurai, and two in Chennai) currently at 100 percent capacity. Furthermore, 18 reservoirs have surpassed 90 percent of their total capacity, and 23 reservoirs maintain water levels between 70 percent and 80 percent.
