Chennai, March 30 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecasted a temperature increase of 1-2 degrees Celsius across Tamil Nadu in the upcoming days.
Nevertheless, a minor decline in maximum temperatures is expected in certain areas of the state between March 31 and April 2.
Currently, Tamil Nadu is facing severe heat, with multiple regions reporting their highest temperatures of the year.
Chennai's Meenambakkam weather station noted a maximum temperature of 39.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday, marking the highest in the city for 2025 - and the highest recorded since 2000.
Madurai observed its first 40 degrees Celsius reading of the year, joining Vellore as the second city to surpass this threshold.
Other cities such as Salem, Vellore, Erode, Karur, and Dharmapuri also noted temperatures exceeding 39 degrees Celsius.
The RMC indicates that maximum temperatures are currently 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal in numerous areas of the state.
While dry weather is anticipated to persist in most regions for the next few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall in southern Tamil Nadu.
Thunderstorms with lightning are expected in isolated locations throughout the state on April 1 and 2, potentially providing temporary relief from the heat.
N. Senthamarai Kannan, Director of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre of the IMD, mentioned that rain activity is projected to commence in southern Tamil Nadu next week. Thunderstorm activity may also emerge in northern regions of the state around April 1 or 2.
The IMD has predicted pre-monsoon showers across various areas of the state, including Chennai, starting April 1.
It stated that southerly winds and limited sea-breeze have contributed to the recent rise in temperatures in Chennai.
A trough extending from central India to the southern interior of Tamil Nadu is also expected to affect weather patterns in the coming days.
Experts anticipate that temperatures will hover around 38-39 degrees Celsius, mirroring trends observed in recent years. As early as February, several interior districts like Karur, Erode, and Salem had already experienced temperature spikes.
The IMD has issued alerts for hot and uncomfortable weather in certain pockets of the state due to elevated humidity levels and rising temperatures. Some regions may continue to experience temperatures 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal in the coming days.
