Agartala, May 18 (NationPress) Tragedy struck a family as two young children—a brother and sister—tragically lost their lives in a drowning incident near a school located in the Purba Chandmari area of West Tripura, according to local police reports on Sunday.
A police official revealed that Prasenjit Debnath (11) and his younger sister Priyanka Debnath (7) ventured out to play near their home on Saturday afternoon but failed to return.
Their father, Krishna Debnath, reported to the police that after an exhaustive search, he could not find his children. The distraught parents scoured nearby areas and alerted authorities.
Unfortunately, there was no sign of the missing children until Sunday morning.
On Sunday afternoon, two construction workers nearby stumbled upon the lifeless bodies of the siblings in a shallow pit intended for a water pump installation, as stated by the police official.
Subsequently, police and Fire and Emergency Service teams arrived at the scene to recover the bodies.
The grieving parents confirmed the identities of Prosenjit and Priyanka.
In response to the heartbreaking incident, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed profound sorrow. In a post on X, he stated, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Krishna Debnath's son Prosenjit (11) and daughter Priyanka (7) in an unexpected incident in the Chandmari area of East Agartala. May Almighty God grant the bereaved family the strength to bear the pain of loss. We will do our best to stand by the family in this difficult time.”
Local residents have accused the construction company and contractors of negligence, suggesting that the unmarked ditch and large waterlogged area contributed to the drowning of the children.
