Agartala, May 19 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha, visited the grieving parents of two children who tragically lost their lives due to drowning in the Purba Chandmari area. During this visit, he offered financial assistance of Rs 8 lakh to the mourning family.
An official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) reported that Saha expressed his heartfelt condolences during his visit to the family of the deceased siblings.
According to police reports, the two young children, a brother and sister, tragically drowned near a school in the Purba Chandmari locality of West Tripura.
On Saturday afternoon, Prasenjit Debnath (11) and his younger sister Priyanka Debnath (7) went out to play close to their home but did not return.
It was reported that on Sunday afternoon, two construction workers spotted the lifeless bodies of the children in a shallow pit that had been dug for a water pump, prompting police and Fire and Emergency Service personnel to recover the bodies.
Upon hearing the devastating news, the Chief Minister extended his condolences to the families of the deceased children, as stated by the CMO official.
On Monday afternoon, Saha, accompanied by senior district administration officials, met with the grieving family and spoke with the father, Krishna Debnath, his wife, and other relatives.
During the meeting, Saha noted that an individual had dug a pit for personal use, which had filled with rainwater, leading the siblings to play there.
“They tragically drowned while attempting to save each other. Initially, their family was unaware of the situation, as the children frequently played there. This heartbreaking news has saddened everyone. The magnitude of this loss is indescribable. After learning about the incident on Sunday, I instructed the District Magistrate to conduct an inquiry,” Saha told the media.
A preliminary report regarding the incident was submitted. The father of the deceased, Krishna Debnath, works as a daily wage laborer.
Saha confirmed that, in addition to providing financial aid of Rs 8 lakh, the government would explore further assistance for the eldest daughter of the affected family, who is currently in Class 12.
