Kolkata, Nov 15 (NationPress) Tragically, three individuals lost their lives in a severe head-on crash involving a motorbike and a pick-up van on a bridge spanning the Teesta River in Jalpaiguri district of north Bengal, according to police reports released on Saturday.
The incident took place late Friday night in the Balapara region.
As per police accounts, two victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while the third was ejected into the river due to the force of the collision.
After being reported missing following the accident, his body was retrieved from the river on Saturday morning, approximately eight hours post-incident, law enforcement stated.
In the aftermath, police officials arrived at the location and commenced an investigation. Preliminary assessments suggest that the accident may have resulted from a loss of control by one of the vehicles.
Witnesses indicated that three individuals were on the motorbike when the pick-up van approached from the opposite side. The head-on impact occurred after one of the vehicles veered off course, ejecting the three riders from the bike. While two landed on the bridge, the third plunged into the Teesta River.
Law enforcement quickly responded to the scene after receiving notifications. The two individuals were swiftly rescued and transported to the Super Specialty Hospital of Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.
Regrettably, another biker has been reported missing since the incident. On Saturday morning, the remains of Bappa Barman, a resident of Sukanta Nagar near Jalpaiguri city, were found in the river beneath the bridge. Authorities asserted that the collision's impact was so severe that his body fell into the water immediately after the crash.
“The accident occurred around 11 p.m. Two individuals died instantly, and one went missing. His remains were recovered this morning. It remains uncertain whether he perished due to the impact or by drowning. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations,” stated a senior officer from the Jalpaiguri district police.
