Kolkata, Feb 23 (NationPress) The Government Railway Police (GRP) have successfully captured a notorious thief who had been habitually robbing train passengers while masquerading as a police officer, as reported on Monday.

GRP officials revealed that the perpetrator would steal under the pretense of inspecting passengers' bags and belongings while dressed in a police uniform, and then make his escape. His downfall came after he pilfered a doctor's bag containing his MBBS certificate and other crucial documents.

On Sunday, the wanted criminal, identified as Sanjay Byapari, was arrested by the Naihati GRP personnel after analyzing CCTV footage. Originally hailing from Chinaurah in Hooghly district, he had recently been residing in the Naihati area of North 24 Parganas district.

Authorities noted that Sanjay employed various tactics on trains to commit his crimes. At times, he would pose as a porter, other times as a hawker, but predominantly as a police officer. His targets included mobile phones and other valuables from passengers' belongings.

Recent reports indicated that Sanjay, dressed in khaki, introduced himself as a railway police constable and boarded the Sealdah-bound Balia Express.

The victim, a doctor, had boarded the train from Bandel station in Hooghly district, carrying Rs 600 in cash along with important documents, including his MBBS certificate and work ID.

Upon boarding the train, the doctor placed his bag on the bunk. From Bandel station, Sanjay boarded the train and began monitoring the passengers' belongings while posing as a police officer. He conducted a search on one or two bags, and due to his uniform, no passengers suspected him. Seizing the moment, the cunning thief snatched the doctor's bag and exited at Naihati station. The doctor only realized his bag was missing before reaching Sealdah station.

Fellow passengers informed him that the 'policeman' had disembarked at Naihati station with his bag. The doctor subsequently filed a zero FIR with the Sealdah GRP, which was forwarded to the Naihati GRP. Based on this, CCTV footage from Naihati station was scrutinized.

It was confirmed that Sanjay was seen exiting with the bag while dressed in a police uniform. Following this, a manhunt ensued. The police scoured various locations in Naihati and ultimately apprehended the wanted criminal. He is currently undergoing interrogation to determine the extent of his criminal activities.
