New Delhi, Nov 7 (NationPress) Union Minister Manohar Lal announced on Friday that transport systems akin to the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) will be established in other significant cities beyond Delhi.
While addressing the Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Exhibition 2025 in Gurugram, the minister emphasized that last-mile connectivity poses a substantial challenge in boosting metro ridership and pledged that the Ministry will collaborate closely with states to implement effective solutions.
The minister pointed out that with almost 1,100 km of operational metro network, India has emerged as the third-largest metro network globally, soon to claim the second position.
In reference to the PM e-Bus Sewa, the minister disclosed plans to roll out 10,000 electric buses in smaller cities, including 100 e-buses designated for Gurugram.
Manohar Lal stated that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), through its subsidiary, Delhi Metro International Limited (DMIL), will serve as the nodal agency for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to carry out consultancy, construction, turnkey projects, management services, and operation and maintenance projects both domestically and internationally.
He further mentioned that DMRC will also function as the nodal organization to assist MoHUA in the planning, coordination, and management of Mass Rapid Transit Systems (MRTS) throughout the nation.
Tokhan Sahu, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, remarked that mobility is not just a means of transport but a catalyst for socio-economic growth.
He underscored that initiatives like Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) are revolutionizing urban mobility and improving the commuting experience across India.
During the event, Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of MoHUA, highlighted the significance of integrated urban development and mobility planning to enhance the liveability and sustainability of Indian cities.
