New Delhi, Jan 2 (NationPress) Gig workers deserve recognition as human beings, rather than mere disposable data points, emphasized Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Friday.

Chadha expressed strong solidarity with gig workers nationwide who participated in a symbolic strike on New Year’s Eve, advocating for fair wages, improved working conditions, and social security from major delivery and e-commerce platforms.

“I engaged in discussions with delivery riders from Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, etc. This isn’t just a complaint; it’s a dialogue with those whose efforts fuel our daily convenience,” the AAP MP remarked on a social media platform.

The nationwide strike, organized collaboratively by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT), saw numerous delivery partners log off their apps or significantly reduce their work.

This protest disrupted services during one of the busiest commercial periods of the year, resulting in reports of delays and cancellations across multiple cities.

“It’s tragic that millions of delivery riders who contributed to the growth of instant-commerce companies are now compelled to protest merely to be acknowledged,” Chadha lamented.

He pointed out that the success of quick delivery platforms is attributed to the dedication and effort of delivery riders, thus they should be treated with dignity.

“These platforms didn't flourish solely due to algorithms. They thrived because of human effort,” Chadha stated.

“It is imperative for companies to start recognizing riders as human beings, not mere disposable data points. The gig economy should not devolve into an exploitation economy without guilt,” he added.

Earlier, in a conversation with IANS, Chadha raised alarm over low and unpredictable pay, extensive working hours, lack of social security, and absence of dignity in the workplace.

“They are individuals, not machines or bonded labor. They hold roles such as father, son, husband, or brother,” he remarked, reiterating his concerns regarding low wages, unpredictable pay, and poor working conditions.

He also criticized the pressure imposed by ultra-fast delivery systems, asserting that the “10-minute delivery torture” is adversely affecting workers' physical and mental well-being.

Point of View

It is essential to recognize the rising voice of gig workers advocating for their rights. This movement underscores a larger conversation about the gig economy's future and the necessity for equitable treatment. Raghav Chadha's statements reflect a growing awareness and responsibility to address the challenges faced by these workers, aligning with the ongoing national dialogue on labor rights and social justice.
