Trinamool Congress Supporter Shot Dead at Rooftop Party in Kolkata
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 26 (NationPress) A supporter of the Trinamool Congress lost his life in Kolkata due to a gunfight between two opposing groups while they were gathered on a rooftop, indulging in alcohol at midnight, as per police reports on Thursday.
Spent cartridges were found scattered throughout the vicinity. The incident happened in Ward No. 101 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The victim has been identified as Rahul Dey (36), while another individual, Jeet Mukherjee, was injured.
According to police, Rahul and Jeet knew each other previously but had lost contact for a while. On Wednesday night, Jeet hosted an event at his home, inviting Rahul to join. A group convened on Jeet's rooftop where they were reportedly drinking. Around 12:30 a.m., neighbors reported hearing gunfire, with about three shots fired. Those present on the rooftop fled the scene, and it was through one of them that the news reached Rahul's family.
When Rahul's brother and mother arrived, they found him lying injured, bloodied and with gunshot wounds. Jeet was found beside him. Both men were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced Rahul dead.
Locals reported that Jeet had been prohibited from entering Patuli since 2021 due to multiple arrests related to various criminal activities. Initially, he served as a loyal aide to the area’s Trinamool Councillor, Bappaditya Dasgupta, but later became involved in illegal activities while allegedly using the Councillor's name. Consequently, the Councillor filed complaints against him, leading to several arrests.
Following these incidents, Jeet was expelled from the Trinamool camp and banned from the area. He then rented a house in the adjacent Ward No. 99 but continued to engage in similar illicit activities, according to police reports, leading to multiple arrests by the Netaji Nagar Police Station.
Reports indicate that Jeet returned to the Phoolbagan area of Patuli about 15 to 20 days ago and resumed staying at his parents' flat, claiming he was only visiting. On Wednesday night, he invited Rahul for a rooftop drinking session. Just as the gathering was in full swing, members of a rival faction entered the complex and opened fire indiscriminately. While Rahul succumbed to his injuries at the scene, Jeet was injured and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital near the EM Bypass.
Rahul’s brother recounted, “I received a call at 1:00 a.m. from one of the party attendees. I rushed to the scene with my mother. Police were already on the rooftop. I saw two individuals lying there, including my brother Rahul. The police brought Jeet down first. By the time I reached my brother, he was gone. It was Jeet who had contacted Rahul after years. How could this happen so suddenly?”
Initial investigations by the police suggest that the shooting was a result of disputes between rival factions over syndicates and monetary distribution.
