Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 26 (NationPress) - The Election Commission of India (ECI) has formally requested a comprehensive report from the Kolkata Police regarding the tragic shooting incident that led to the death of Trinamool Congress member Rahul Dey (36). This incident unfolded late Wednesday night on the rooftop of a home in Bagha Jatin, located on the southern outskirts of Kolkata, where two rival factions were reportedly gathered and consuming alcohol.
During the shootout, another individual, Jeet Mukherjee, was injured by gunfire.
The ECI has also demanded information about the actions taken by the local authorities concerning this matter.
As of now, police have detained four suspects connected to the incident: Deep Roy, Bidhan Banerjee, Raja Banik, and Jayant Ghosh. Initial reports suggest that the conflict may have arisen from a dispute over gambling proceeds.
All four suspects have been identified as local members of the Trinamool Congress.
According to law enforcement, Rahul and Jeet were once acquaintances, although they had not communicated in some time. On the night of the incident, Rahul had been invited to an event at Jeet Mukherjee’s residence, where attendees congregated on the rooftop to socialize over drinks.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., neighbors reported hearing gunfire, with around three shots fired. Those on the rooftop quickly fled the area, and it was through one of these individuals that the news reached Rahul’s family.
Additionally, the ECI has requested reports regarding violent altercations between opposing political factions in Basanti, located in the South 24 Parganas district, earlier on the same day. To address the unrest, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been dispatched to the Basanti area, conducting a route march to alleviate residents' fears following the clashes.
A sub-inspector from the local police station suffered significant injuries during these confrontations.
