  • The practice was declared unconstitutional in India in 2017.
  • Money was sent to Razzaq for the woman's travel to UAE.
  • The woman plans to file a case against her husband.
  • Her family has approached the police for action against Razzaq.

Kasargod, March 1 (NationPress) A 21-year-old woman living in Kerala's Kasargod was left astounded when her husband dispatched a "talaq, talaq, talaq" message on WhatsApp to her father.

Abdul Razzaq's message contained the word "talaq" repeated three times, indicating the termination of his marriage with the man's daughter.

Razzaq, who is employed in the UAE, sent the message on February 21.

Triple talaq is an Islamic divorce practice that enables a Muslim man to divorce his wife by uttering "talaq" three times. This practice was declared null and unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2017. Furthermore, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act was enacted by Parliament in 2019, criminalizing triple talaq.

Razzaq, also a native of Kasargod, married the woman in August 2022 when she was just 18.

The woman reported that Razzaq had been requesting money and had previously taken her to the UAE.

"He frequently demands money, and I am appalled by his actions. I believe he has doubts about me. I seek justice and will pursue legal action," stated Razzaq's wife.

In the meantime, the woman's father mentioned that they had sent money to Razzaq and possesses documents to verify it.

"After receiving the funds, Razzaq sent the triple talaq message. There is a proper procedure for talaq that involves elders and religious figures. This is not how it should be done," the father remarked.

The funds were sent to Razzaq so that he could take his wife to the UAE.

"To gather the money, we sold the woman's gold jewelry, and the funds were sent," he added.

She was scheduled to travel to the UAE on February 24, but received the triple talaq message on February 21.

The woman's family has reported Razzaq to the local police for cheating.
