Tripura CM Manik Saha: Agartala to be Northeast hub; ₹1.21 lakh crore investment secured
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on 11 July declared that Agartala and the broader state of Tripura are on course to become a defining development hub in the Northeast, citing infrastructure gains, a landmark investor summit, and a deliberate push to restore and beautify religious heritage sites. Saha made the remarks while inaugurating the Shib Bari Water Reservoir Development and Beautification Project at Shib Bari Square on Central Road, Agartala.
Record Investment Intentions from the Summit
Saha highlighted what he described as a transformative outcome from the state's recently concluded two-day investor summit, which drew nearly 1,200 delegates — more than double the 500 the government had anticipated. The conclave generated investment intentions worth approximately ₹1.21 lakh crore, surpassing the state's own target of ₹1 lakh crore.
'The Prime Minister himself expressed happiness over the success of the summit,' Saha said, adding that the strong turnout from across the country and abroad reflected growing confidence in Tripura's economic trajectory. Investors and tourists, he noted, are increasingly taking notice of the state's improving infrastructure and public amenities.
Religious Heritage as a Development Priority
A significant thread of Saha's address was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government's commitment to preserving and upgrading religious sites — a policy he linked directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's national agenda since 2014.
'The Prime Minister has created an atmosphere of faith across the country. Following the same vision, the Tripura government, after assuming office in 2018, has also laid special emphasis on the development and preservation of religious places,' Saha said.
He cited several central initiatives as precedents: the consecration of Ram Lalla at the Ayodhya temple on 22 January 2024, the inauguration of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi in 2021, the modernisation of the Somnath Temple in Gujarat, and the beautification of the temple of Maa Sarada Devi in Jammu and Kashmir. He also pointed to the development of the Tripura Sundari Temple under the Centre's PRASAD scheme.
According to Saha, many of these sites had remained neglected under previous governments and are now receiving sustained attention for the first time.
What Is Being Built in Tripura
At the state level, Saha outlined a cluster of ongoing religious-infrastructure projects. Funds have been allocated for the Fourteen Gods (Chaturdasha Devata) Temple, the Kasbeshwari Temple at Kamalasagar in Sepahijala district is being developed, and ponds attached to several religious sites are being renovated and beautified. The Shib Bari Water Reservoir inauguration on Friday is part of this wider programme.
'Such initiatives will continue in the coming years because these places are associated with people's faith and spiritual values,' Saha said, framing religious-site development as both a cultural imperative and a tourism driver.
Who Attended the Inauguration
The ceremony was attended by Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Manika Das Datta, Central Zone Chairman Ratna Datta, Urban Development Department Secretary Milind Ramteke, Tripura Jal Board CEO Mihir Kanti Gop, and AMC Commissioner Saju Wahid A, along with other public representatives and senior officials.
What Comes Next
With investment intentions now logged at ₹1.21 lakh crore, the focus shifts to converting those pledges into on-ground projects. The state government has signalled that religious-site beautification and infrastructure upgrades will continue in parallel, positioning Tripura as a destination for both business and pilgrimage tourism in the years ahead.
