Agartala, March 16 (NationPress) A local court in Tripura has sent a youth to jail for the brutal killing of a street dog, as confirmed by officials.

The individual, apprehended from Wak Shimalung Para village in the Khowai district on Saturday, is accused of killing the dog on March 11. He has been identified as Bador Jamatia and is facing charges under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

On Sunday, the police presented Jamatia before a Khowai court, where he was initially granted bail. However, due to the absence of a bailer, he remains in custody. An official stated, "The accused will stay in judicial custody until someone comes forward to act as his surety."

The police took action after Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, the head of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and a royal descendant, filed an FIR upon witnessing a video on social media that depicted Jamatia's cruelty towards the animal.

Debbarma's FIR expressed, "Jamatia was recorded (in a video) brutally killing a dog by beating it repeatedly until it died (tortured to death)."

The animal welfare organization, Pawsome, Tripura's first of its kind, also lodged a separate FIR at the Teliamura police station regarding the incident. The footage of Jamatia's actions circulated widely on social media, sparking considerable outrage, particularly among animal advocates.

According to the viral footage, Jamatia was seen brutally beating the dog and subsequently hanging it from a tree. He had evaded arrest until he was captured on Saturday.

Jamatia has a history of similar accusations involving the killing of other animals, including street dogs, as reported by the police. Sudhangshu Das, the Minister of Animal Resources Development in Tripura, condemned the horrific act and instructed law enforcement to promptly apprehend the perpetrator.
