Tripura's digital health model wins national praise at Kolkata AB PM-JAY review
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tripura's public healthcare infrastructure upgrades and digital health expansion drew wide appreciation at the National Review Meeting on Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), held in Kolkata on 5–6 November 2026. The two-day meeting, organised by the National Health Authority (NHA), brought together senior health officials from states and Union Territories across India.
What Tripura Presented
Tripura's Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kiran Gitte delivered a detailed presentation on the state's model civil hospitals, digital health initiatives, and the government's forward-looking action plans. The presentation covered the operational framework underpinning the state's healthcare transformation and the measurable progress achieved so far.
Attending the meeting were key national and state figures, including Sharad Kumar Dwivedi, CEO of the State Health Agency and Secretary of the West Bengal Department of Health and Family Welfare, and Kiran Gopal Bhaskar, Joint Secretary of the National Health Authority.
100% Digital Coverage Under IHMIS
Secretary Gitte announced that Tripura has achieved 100 per cent coverage of all public healthcare institutions under the Integrated Health Management Information System (IHMIS), bringing every government hospital in the state onto a single digital platform. The state has now set a target to bring private healthcare institutions under the same system within two months.
Gitte also confirmed that all government hospitals across Tripura are set to transition to fully paperless operations from 10 November, eliminating manual and paper-based procedures entirely from healthcare service delivery.
Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital: A Flagship Model
Gitte cited Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Agartala Civil Hospital as the benchmark for Tripura's digital health vision. The facility has functioned as a fully paperless institution since its inception, offering end-to-end digital services — from OPD registration and token generation to admission, prescriptions, medicine dispensing, and laboratory testing. It represents the model that all government hospitals in the state are now expected to replicate.
Leadership and Vision
A senior health official in Agartala attributed the state's progress to the vision of Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio and has consistently emphasised modernising and strengthening Tripura's healthcare services.
G. Sharath Naik, CEO of Ayushman Bharat (Tripura) and State Mission Director of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, also addressed the national gathering.
What Comes Next
The CEO of the National Health Authority and Tripura's Health Secretary have formally invited officials attending the review meeting to visit Tripura and witness the state's digital healthcare transformation firsthand. The initiative is expected to reinforce Tripura's standing as a model for technology-driven, patient-friendly healthcare delivery at the national level, with the statewide paperless rollout set to take effect within days.
