New Delhi, Oct 17 (NationPress) The German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, expressed optimism on Friday regarding the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He hopes this session will be more productive than their previous encounter in Alaska. During the NDTV World Summit, the ambassador emphasized Germany's deep concern over the situation in Ukraine and a strong desire to see the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv come to an end.
“In Germany, and broadly across Europe, we are increasingly worried about developments in Ukraine. Recently, there has been a significant wake-up call, particularly when Russian fighter jets briefly entered NATO airspace. Furthermore, there have been drone sightings over Scandinavian airports that may be linked to Russia, heightening the sense of threat across Europe,” stated Ackermann.
“Rather than feeling fatigue or exhaustion, we have a renewed urge to conclude this war. Regarding the potential meeting between Putin and Trump, I sincerely hope it yields better outcomes than the last. It is critical to acknowledge that the US appears more open to engaging in discussions with Ukraine, which may be causing some unease in Russia. This signals strength and a stance of not accepting everything imposed on us. We must have a blend of strength and openness to dialogue,” he elaborated.
He further noted that the situation in the Middle East differs significantly, where there is currently no peace process in place. “While I hope for progress soon in the Russia-Ukraine situation, we are not there yet,” he added.
Ambassador Ackermann also highlighted the role of Ukraine in assisting Germany with counter-drone technology. “Ukrainians are proving invaluable in combating drone attacks due to their advanced technology, which we currently lack. This recent surge in Russian warfare requires a decisive response, and it’s essential for Europe, including the UK, to prepare its armed forces to deter aggression. Consequently, Germany's defense spending is set to increase significantly to enhance our military readiness,” he stated.
