Tirupati, June 6 (NationPress) In a decisive effort to protect the integrity and intellectual property of the revered Tirupati Laddu, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) has launched legal proceedings against several unauthorized entities that are unlawfully marketing or advertising products using the name "Tirupati Laddu," infringing on its registered Geographical Indication (GI).
Legal notices were dispatched via Sahadeva Law Chambers to various online platforms and vendors, including PushMyCart (Mahita LLC) and Transact Foods Limited, for the unauthorized commercial exploitation of the Tirupati Laddu name and for misleadingly associating their products with the temple.
As per an official statement, the legal notices underscored that the Tirupati Laddu is a protected GI under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
The preparation of these laddus is a sacred ritual conducted solely within the Tirumala Temple under TTD's supervision, adhering to a time-honored and revered process. The unauthorized use and sale of this name not only violate legal rights but also compromise the spiritual sanctity of the offering.
In response, PushMyCart confirmed receipt of the legal notice and, demonstrating goodwill, has suspended the infringing product listings while awaiting a legal review. Several other vendors have also removed their listings following TTD’s proactive notification.
“The Tirupati Laddu is more than just a product; it is a sacred prasadam with significant spiritual and cultural importance. We are determined to take every necessary legal measure to prevent its misuse and protect the faith of millions of devotees worldwide,” stated TTD Executive Officer J. Syamala Rao.
This situation marks a pioneering instance in India where a temple offering protected under GI law has been defended through formal legal channels on international platforms.
Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the Tirupati Laddu ghee adulteration case has opposed bail petitions from all three accused in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
The Managing Director of AR Dairy, Raju Sekharan, along with directors of Bhole Baba Organic Dairy, Pomil Jain, Vipin Jain, and Vaishavi CEO Apoorva Vinaykant Chawda, have applied for bail. The court has adjourned the hearing until June 17.
The CBI counsel informed the High Court that the accused are part of a criminal conspiracy. It is alleged that Bhole Baba Dairy utilized AR Dairy and Vaishnavi Dairy as fronts to secure a ghee supply contract from TTD.
Investigations by the SIT revealed that the ghee supplied to TTD was adulterated with palm oil and chemicals. The SIT, led by CBI Joint Director Viresh Prabhu, arrested the suspects in February.
The SIT was constituted by the Supreme Court to investigate allegations regarding adulterated ghee being used in the preparation of sacred laddus.
