Chennai, March 28 (NationPress) The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), spearheaded by actor-turned-politician Vijay, convened its inaugural general council meeting on Friday in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai. During this assembly, it called for the repeal of the Waqf Bill and the preservation of the bilingual policy.

Over 2,000 members participated in the meeting, where 17 resolutions were adopted to tackle various urgent matters at both state and national levels.

A pivotal resolution was the party’s emphatic request for the Union government to revoke the Waqf Amendment Bill.

The TVK articulated that, despite being framed as a strategy to enhance transparency in the management of Waqf properties, the Bill would, in effect, infringe upon the rights of the Muslim community and impose limitations that could exacerbate their marginalization.

Additionally, the TVK insisted on the continuation of the bilingual policy and expressed strong opposition to the three-language policy proposed by the Centre.

The party reiterated its unwavering support for the fishermen of Tamil Nadu, who have faced persistent violence and fatalities at the hands of the Sri Lankan Navy.

TVK demanded a lasting resolution from the Union government to address the issues faced by the fishing community and pledged to take significant measures to protect their interests.

Other crucial resolutions passed during the meeting underscored the TVK’s commitment to social justice, decentralization of power, and good governance.

The party also opposed the development of a new airport in Parandur, citing environmental concerns and potential displacement.

Furthermore, the TVK called for greater devolution of powers to state governments, advocating for increased autonomy in regional governance.

The party urged the establishment of special fast-track courts to expedite the investigation of sexual assault cases, ensuring swift justice for victims.

The resolution also criticized the DMK government for failing to maintain law and order.

Moreover, the TVK demanded an investigation into the Rs 1,000 crore scam involving TASMAC, the state-run liquor outlet chain.

The TVK supported a caste-wise Census to guarantee fair representation and policies aimed at achieving social justice.

Additionally, the party urged the government to refrain from misleading employees, teachers, and workers with unfulfilled promises.

In a bid to honor Tamil Nadu’s legacy of social reform, the party proposed naming the upcoming international convention center located on East Coast Road in Chennai after Periyar, a distinguished social reformer.

The TVK also expressed ongoing support for a sustainable resolution to the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, advocating for a referendum as a democratic route forward.

Lastly, the party reaffirmed its allegiance to the tenets of its policy leaders and unanimously empowered its leader, Vijay, to guide the party’s future direction.

Vijay officially launched the TVK on February 2, 2024, positioning it as a platform against corruption and divisive politics.

While choosing not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he confirmed that the TVK will actively engage in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Vijay has emphasized that the TVK will align only with parties that acknowledge his leadership, indicating his ambition to emerge as a formidable candidate for the Chief Minister’s position in 2026.
