Betul, Jan 10 (NationPress) On Saturday, the police of Madhya Pradesh apprehended two individuals accused of removing and incinerating saffron flags that had been set up for a Hindu sammelan (conference) scheduled to take place in Lohiya town of Betul district.
The arrests followed a report made at the Kotwali police station, claiming that certain anti-social elements had burned the saffron flags that were placed at the event site and along the roads late Friday night.
The report was lodged by Romit Uike, a member of the organizing committee for the Hindu Conference.
This upcoming Hindu Conference is a significant social and religious event happening on January 18, marking the centenary celebration of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
According to the police, local RSS workers noticed that approximately eight to ten saffron flags were missing and had allegedly been burned when they gathered for a 'Shakha' and began their 'prabhat-pheri' (morning walk) early Saturday morning.
The incident led to heightened tensions in the area as numerous right-wing activists congregated to protest and demand action regarding the situation.
Virendra Jain, the Betul Superintendent of Police (SP), along with senior administrative officials, arrived at the scene and ordered an investigation into the occurrence.
To maintain peace, heavy security was deployed, and the area was cordoned off.
During the investigation, police teams reviewed multiple CCTV recordings from nearby buildings, which indicated that two individuals were seen removing the saffron flags.
According to SP Jain, CCTV footage showed that two individuals arrived in a Santro car, took down the saffron flags, and set them ablaze. Following this, a search operation was initiated to locate the suspects.
After an extensive search, both individuals identified in the CCTV footage were apprehended by Saturday evening.
The suspects were identified as Taufeeq and Musharraf.
They have been charged under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to Betul SP Jain.
SP Jain elaborated, "A Hindu conference is scheduled to be held in the Ganj area's Lohia Ward, and saffron flags were set up for this purpose. A complaint was registered at the police station stating that eight to ten saffron flags were removed and burned by some individuals with the intent to hurt religious sentiments and foster communal discord.
