Bhopal, March 29 (NationPress) Two students lost their lives when their bike fell into a canal in Satna, a city located about 500 km east of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday.
The accident occurred around 2 p.m. in the vicinity of the Kolgawan police station in Satna, leaving two more individuals in serious condition as they tried to save their friends.
As per Sudeep Soni, the officer in charge of Kolgawan police station, the tragedy involved four friends, all of whom were students at a private university in Satna, riding on two different bikes. While traveling alongside a road that runs parallel to the canal, one of the motorcycles lost control and plunged into the water. The two students on that bike, identified as Anurag Singh and Vikas Pandey, both around 20 years old, tragically drowned as they were unable to escape the deep water.
Seeing their friends in distress, the other two students, who were on the second bike, jumped into the canal to attempt a rescue. Unfortunately, despite their brave efforts, they could not save Anurag and Vikas. The rescuers themselves were nearly drowned, but local bystanders intervened and pulled them to safety. The rescued students were in a semi-conscious state and were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
This canal, situated behind Satna Medical College, receives its water supply from the Bansagar Dam and is notably deep, posing considerable danger.
Earlier that day, all four students had reportedly visited a water park before the tragic incident occurred.
Upon receiving an emergency call, a team from the Kolgawan police station arrived swiftly to commence rescue operations, retrieving the bodies of Anurag Singh and Vikas Pandey from the canal.
Following standard legal protocols, the police arranged for post-mortem examinations of the bodies. Once completed, the deceased were returned to their grieving families.
Initial investigations indicate that the accident was likely caused by the bike losing balance on the road adjacent to the canal, but authorities are conducting a comprehensive inquiry to uncover further details.
